What is the difference between Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette?

Quick Answer

EDP has 15–20% fragrance oil and lasts 6–8 hours. EDT has 5–15% and lasts 3–4 hours. In South Africa's heat, EDP generally offers better value for money.

The Quick Answer

Eau de Parfum (EDP) contains 15–20% fragrance oil concentration, while Eau de Toilette (EDT) contains 5–15%. This directly affects how long the scent lasts and how strongly it projects.

Concentration Breakdown

TypeConcentrationLongevityBest For
Parfum / Extrait20–40%10–12+ hoursSpecial occasions, evening
Eau de Parfum (EDP)15–20%6–8 hoursDaily wear, best value
Eau de Toilette (EDT)5–15%3–4 hoursOffice, casual, budget option
Eau de Cologne (EDC)2–5%1–2 hoursQuick refresh, sports

Which Should You Choose in South Africa?

EDP is almost always the better choice for SA weather. Here's why:

  • Heat accelerates evaporation — EDT fades even faster in Joburg's 30°C+ summers
  • EDP gives you 2–3x the wear time for typically only 15–25% more cost
  • Projection matters — EDP pushes through the heat better than EDT

The Exception

Some fragrances are actually *better* in EDT form. Dior Sauvage EDT, for example, has a brighter, fresher character that many prefer over the denser EDP. The same applies to Bleu de Chanel — the EDT is crisper and more office-appropriate.

Price Comparison (South Africa)

For a typical 100ml designer fragrance in South Africa:

  • EDT: R1,200 – R1,800
  • EDP: R1,500 – R2,400
  • Price per hour of wear: EDP often works out cheaper

Our Recommendation

If you're buying one bottle and want it to last all day in South African conditions, go EDP. If you're building a collection and want variety, mixing EDT (for office) and EDP/Extrait (for evenings) gives the best range.
