Louis Vuitton made perfume in the early twentieth century and then stopped; its last fragrance before the modern era dates to 1946. The house returned to the category in 2016, seventy years later, and did it seriously. LVMH acquired Les Fontaines Parfumees in Grasse in 2013 to serve as the perfume house, and hired Jacques Cavallier Belletrud, a third-generation Grasse perfumer whose earlier work includes L'Eau d'Issey, as master perfumer. Every Louis Vuitton fragrance since has been his.
Pacific Chill, from 2023, is one of his lightest and most deliberately odd. Louis Vuitton says it was inspired by the Californian way of life, made in collaboration with the artist Alex Israel, and describes it as a detox-like cologne. The house's own account of the composition names blackcurrant lifted by citron and lemon, amplified by coriander and basil seeds, peppermint and orange. Fuller listings add apricot, carrot seed and May rose in the middle, with fig, dates and ambrette below.
The effect is closer to a cold-pressed green juice than to a traditional cologne, which is clearly the point. It opens loud and sour, citrus and mint with a real herbal bite from basil and coriander. Then something unusual happens: carrot seed and apricot bring a soft, earthy sweetness into the middle, and the base of fig, dates and ambrette gives it a dry, faintly milky finish rather than the usual clean musk. It is genuinely refreshing without being generic, which is rare in this space.
It is the obvious choice for heat. A Highveld summer afternoon is exactly where it earns its keep, and it is equally at home on the coast.
Performance is the honest caveat. Even at eau de parfum strength this is a citrus-and-herb structure, and it behaves like one: five to seven hours with a bright, projecting first hour and a much quieter remainder. Louis Vuitton bottles are refillable, which softens the maths somewhat. There is no reformulation history to report, as this is a recent release still in current production, and the composition is credited by the house itself rather than attributed second-hand.

AI Review Summary
Synthesised from fragrance data
Pacific Chill opens with a bright, zesty hit of bergamot and ginger before settling into a cool marine heart lifted by mint and cardamom — it's the kind of fresh scent that actually has something interesting to say rather than just smelling clean for the sake of it. The vetiver and white musk base keep things grounded and quietly sophisticated, giving it that polished, modern finish that feels effortless rather than try-hard. Performance is solid for a fresh fragrance, clocking in at 6 to 8 hours with moderate sillage — enough presence without overwhelming anyone around you. It's a natural fit for warm-weather days, whether you're heading into the office or spending a Sunday afternoon outdoors, and it wears just as comfortably on any gender. If you're drawn to aquatic scents but find most of them a bit flat or generic, Pacific Chill is worth a serious sniff.
