Roja Elysium Pour Homme Parfum Cologne

Elysium is the fragrance that made Roja Parfums a name outside collector circles. The house's own copy puts it without much modesty, calling Elysium an iconic word in the world of perfumery that has consistently triumphed on the global stage since its debut in 2017. For once the claim is defensible. It arrived at a moment when men's fresh fragrances had settled into a decade of the same synthetic marine accord, and it offered something both brighter and more complicated.

Roja Dove's own description of the construction is worth repeating because it is exact: it opens with a prominent freshness that lasts all day and dries down into a base of extreme depth and masculinity. The opening is a large, sunlit citrus accord of lemon, bergamot, grapefruit and lime, but the interesting part is what is layered into it. Thyme, artemisia and lavender give a bitter herbal edge, and galbanum contributes a green sap note that stops the whole thing reading as shower gel. The heart brings apple and blackcurrant, tart and slightly sweet, with lily-of-the-valley, Rose de Mai and Jasmin de Grasse providing an almost invisible floral cushion. Then the base does the work: cypriol and vetiver for smoke and earth, juniper berry and pink pepper for spice, cedarwood for dryness, and benzoin, vanilla, labdanum, leather and ambergris for the warm, animalic finish.

The trick is that the freshness never fully leaves. Six hours in you can still smell citrus sitting on top of leather and ambergris, which is not how most fresh fragrances behave and is the main reason people become attached to it.

It is close to season-proof. Bright enough for a Highveld summer morning, deep enough for a winter evening, and it works in an office without being anonymous. It is marketed to men and worn by plenty of women.

Performance is strong: ten hours or more, with projection that stays noticeable through the first four. Check which concentration you are buying. Roja's own Elysium collection now lists Elysium Pour Homme in eau de parfum and in parfum, alongside Elysium Noir and Elysium Eau Intense, and the Parfum Cologne that carried the name at launch is no longer among them. The balance between the citrus and the base shifts from one strength to the next, so the concentration on the box is worth reading before you buy.
