The Story of Vanilla

Vanilla is the world's most popular scent — and the second most expensive spice after saffron. Derived from the seed pods of the Vanilla planifolia orchid (native to Mexico), vanilla has been used in fragrance since the Aztecs flavoured their royal chocolate drinks with it in the 15th century.

In modern perfumery, vanilla is the cornerstone of the "gourmand" category — fragrances that smell edible, comforting, and warm. The rise of gourmand perfumery in the 1990s (led by Thierry Mugler's Angel in 1992) turned vanilla from a background note into a star ingredient. How Vanilla Is Extracted

Natural vanilla extraction is incredibly labour-intensive. Each vanilla orchid flower must be hand-pollinated during its single day of blooming. The pods are then harvested, cured in the sun for months, and slowly dried. It takes 600 hand-pollinated flowers to produce 1kg of cured vanilla beans. This is why natural vanilla costs R8,000–R15,000 per kilogram. Most perfumes use vanillin (the primary aromatic compound in vanilla) synthesised from wood pulp or petrochemicals — chemically identical to the natural molecule but far more affordable and consistent.
