Roja Enigma Pour Homme Parfum Cologne

Enigma is what people usually have in mind when they say a Roja smells expensive. The house's own description gets at why: it combines, in its words, the balsamic sweetness of benzoin and vanilla with the dry masculinity of tobacco and cognac, and it compares the result to the pleasure of a fine cigar. Roja Dove founded the house in Mayfair in 2011 after roughly twenty years at Guerlain, where he became known as its Professeur de Parfums, and Enigma is where that classical training is most obvious. Nothing about it is modern. It is a boozy, powdery, tobacco-heavy composition of a kind that essentially stopped being made in the 1980s.

The opening is a flash of bergamot and then straight into the body. Heliotrope arrives almost immediately and defines the fragrance: powdery, almond-sweet, with a cherry-like quality that Roja's own copy describes as appearing to fizz against the cognac. Rose de Mai, jasmine, neroli and geranium sit behind it, adding a floral roundness that keeps it from being purely a gourmand. Cardamom, ginger and pepper give a dry spice that runs through the whole wear.

Then the base, which is most of the experience. Cognac provides real alcoholic lift, tobacco brings a sweet leafy depth rather than ash, and benzoin and vanilla pull everything together into something resinous and warm. Sandalwood, patchouli and ambergris underneath give it weight and a faintly salty finish.

Cold weather, evenings, occasions with a dress code. A Cape winter dinner rather than a Durban summer lunch, where the sweetness would become heavy fast.

One thing to be clear about is concentration. Roja currently lists Enigma Pour Homme in parfum and eau de parfum on its own site; the Parfum Cologne is a lighter reading of the same composition and is not among the versions the house is currently showing. Whichever you find, performance is strong: eight to twelve hours depending on strength, with heavy projection in the first two hours and a long sweet drydown. One spray genuinely suffices. This is a fragrance that fills a room whether or not you asked it to.
