Vetiver is the material that separates perfumers who can build from perfumers who can only decorate, because on its own it is difficult: earthy, smoky, bitter, faintly rooty, and prone to smelling like damp soil if handled carelessly. Roja Dove, who spent around two decades at Guerlain before opening his Mayfair house in 2011, treats it as a classical exercise here rather than a modern one. It opens clean and slightly austere, lemon and bergamot with no sweetness at all, more like citrus peel than juice. The heart is brief and functional, rose de Mai and jasmine giving a moment of floral roundness with labdanum starting to warm things from below. Then the base arrives and stays for the whole wear, which is exactly how a vetiver should be built.

That base is the interesting part. Haitian-style vetiver sits at the centre, dry and smoky rather than green, with oakmoss adding a proper chypre bitterness and cedar, cedar needles and guaiac wood layering on resin and dry timber. What makes it distinctive is the spicing, which is unusually seed-driven: celery seed and caraway alongside nutmeg and pink pepper, giving a savoury, almost herbaceous edge that keeps the fragrance from being just another polished vetiver. Amyris and galbanum add creaminess and a green snap respectively.

It suits cool, dry conditions. A Karoo winter morning or a crisp Highveld day flatters it; humidity blunts the dry spices and makes the moss sit heavier than it should. It is formal, masculine in the old sense, and better suited to daytime than to a night out.

Performance in parfum strength is strong: nine to twelve hours is normal, with moderate projection rather than a large cloud, and a very persistent skin phase. Vetiver and oakmoss both cling to fabric, so expect coat collars to carry it for days. Sample if you can, both for the celery-seed facet, which is divisive, and because sourcing needs care.
