Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt

Jo Malone London made its name on restraint. The founder opened her first shop in London in the 1990s, built the business on simple, ingredient-named colognes and the habit of layering two of them together, and sold to Estee Lauder in 1999; she left the company in 2006 and the house has carried her name without her involvement since. Wood Sage & Sea Salt, launched in 2014, is arguably the most successful thing it has done in the last two decades, and it is commonly attributed to Christine Nagel, who moved to Hermes as in-house perfumer around the same period. The house does not print a perfumer credit on the product page.

Jo Malone's own notes are unusually short: ambrette seeds at the top, salt at the heart, sage at the base. The brief was the British coastline, and the fragrance is genuinely good at it. Ambrette is the key material and does something no synthetic musk quite manages, reading simultaneously like warm skin, pear skin and something faintly vegetal. The salt accord is not the sharp ozonic blast of a 1990s marine; it is mineral and slightly damp, more wet rock than open sea. Sage arrives late and dry, greyish and herbal, and it is what gives the drydown its windswept quality rather than a beachy one. The overall effect is grey rather than blue, which is precisely why it escaped the fate of most aquatics.

It is completely unisex, and unusually it gets better outdoors. A windy Cape summer afternoon is its natural home, and it works well as a warm-weather alternative to a citrus cologne because it does not evaporate into nothing within the hour.

That said, be honest about the cologne format. Jo Malone's colognes sit at a lower concentration than an eau de parfum, and Wood Sage & Sea Salt is a moderate performer at best: four to five hours, close to the skin after the first, with the ambrette lingering longest. This is where the house's layering habit earns its keep, and why the collection extends into body creams and washes that extend wear far more effectively than overspraying does. The formula has remained consistent since launch and remains a core part of the range.
