Acqua di Giò Parfum

Acqua di Giò is the reason an entire generation of men's fragrance smells the way it does. The 1996 original, commonly credited to Alberto Morillas, took the aquatic idea then circulating and made it the default, and for the better part of thirty years every fresh masculine on the market has been arguing with it in one way or another. The Parfum, launched in 2023, is Armani's attempt to make that idea serious again.

Armani's own description is short: a woody and aquatic scent distinguished by bergamot, rosemary essence and incense, presented in a refillable bottle. Fuller published breakdowns add marine notes alongside the bergamot, clary sage and geranium through the heart, and patchouli beneath the incense.

The difference from the eau de toilette is immediate. Where the original is bright, salty and slightly soapy, the Parfum is darker and drier from the first minute. Rosemary and clary sage give it a herbal, almost medicinal edge, the marine accord is present but recessed, and the incense underneath is the genuine change, smoky and resinous and entirely absent from the 1996 composition. It smells less like a beach and more like the shade behind one. Geranium adds a green metallic bite that stops it from softening into something generic.

This is a versatile fragrance and an unusually well-behaved one. It works for the office, for dinner, and for a Highveld summer where a heavier woody would suffocate, because the marine element keeps air moving through it. It skews masculine but is not exclusively so.

Performance is a real improvement on the line's history. Expect eight to ten hours with moderate projection, which is not a beast but no longer the two-hour disappearing act aquatics have long been mocked for. The bottle is refillable, which matters if this becomes a daily driver. If you already own the eau de toilette, treat the Parfum as a companion for cooler months rather than as a replacement. They are recognisably related and they are not interchangeable, and owning both is far more sensible than trying to choose between them on paper.
