Jo Malone Grapefruit

Grapefruit dates to 1992, from the period when Jo Malone was still a facialist building a fragrance line out of her own kitchen and treatment room in London, before the brand became a global name. Fragrantica credits the composition to Jo Malone herself. The house she founded joined The Estee Lauder Companies in 1999 and now sells in more than eighty markets, and its stated philosophy has not changed: mix unexpected combinations, layer scents together, use fragrance with abandon rather than reverence. Jo Malone London's own description of Grapefruit is a single image rather than a pyramid. Grapefruit trees in the herb garden, with rosemary, peppermint and pimento adding piquancy to the fruit in the morning sun. The commonly published pyramid agrees and expands it: grapefruit and tangerine at the top, rosemary, mint, paprika and jasmine in the heart, and vetiver, oakmoss and patchouli underneath. The pleasure here is the herb garden, not the fruit bowl. The grapefruit is pithy and slightly bitter, more zest than juice, and within a few minutes rosemary and mint arrive to turn it savoury. Pimento and paprika give an almost peppery dryness that most citrus colognes never attempt. Then, unusually for something this bright, it lands on moss and patchouli, which gives it a shadowed, faintly earthy finish rather than simply evaporating. That base is what separates it from supermarket citrus. It is a morning fragrance, and it is genuinely unisex. It works for the school run, the office, a Saturday market. On a hot, still day anywhere along the coast it is a relief rather than a burden. It also layers well, which is the house's entire proposition, and it sits particularly comfortably under woodier or spicier colognes from the same line. Now the honesty. Citrus does not last, and this is a cologne concentration, so expect three to five hours on skin: vivid at the start, then a quiet, mossy remainder. Frequent reapplication is part of owning it. Wearers who have followed the fragrance for many years report the oakmoss as lighter than in older bottles, which is consistent with the industry-wide restrictions on that material rather than any announced change. It remains part of the permanent Jo Malone London range. Note also that the founder herself parted ways with the company in the mid-2000s and later started a separate business, so the name on the bottle is a brand rather than a personal signature today.
