Nishane Karagoz Extrait de Parfum

Karagöz and Hacivat are the two lead characters of Turkish shadow puppet theatre, an art form that goes back centuries and was for a long time the closest thing Ottoman audiences had to satire. Nishane, founded in Istanbul in 2012 and widely described as Turkey's first niche house, named fragrances after both and grouped them in what it calls the Shadow Play collection. It is a rare case of a perfume house drawing on a specific national tradition rather than a vague idea of the East, and it is one of the reasons the brand broke out internationally instead of remaining a local curiosity.

Karagöz the character is blunt, quick-witted, uneducated and honest. Nishane's own note describes the fragrance as a tribute to the playful treats of life, to wittiness, straightforwardness and sincerity, and to the pleasure of being noticed. The composition matches that brief. Pineapple and black grape open it, sweet and faintly fermented, sharpened by a bouquet garni accord that brings a savoury herbal edge most fruity openings simply do not have. The heart turns floral and green with neroli, jasmine and patchouli, the patchouli entering early and pulling the fruit downward. The base is where it becomes serious: vetiver, agarwood and amber, dry and resinous, the oud used at a level that adds depth rather than announcing itself.

The fruit-into-woods structure invites comparison with a certain famous pineapple chypre, but Karagöz is denser, sweeter and warmer, and in extrait concentration it behaves quite differently on skin. It is a night fragrance and a cold-weather one. A Highveld winter evening suits it; a hot afternoon does not. Unisex in practice, though it wears darker on warm skin.

Performance is excellent. At this concentration ten hours is routine and often more, projection stays strong for the first few, and a resinous amber and oud trail clings to clothing well afterwards. Nishane does not credit individual perfumers for its releases, so the composition is best discussed on its own terms rather than attributed to anyone. Spray sparingly and give it twenty minutes before judging it.
