Khamrah Qahwa

Khamrah Qahwa takes the boozy spiced gourmand of the original Khamrah and pushes it towards the coffee pot. Cinnamon, cardamom and ginger open it hot and dry, a genuinely spicy first impression that smells like a Gulf coffee house rather than a dessert counter. The heart adds praline and candied fruits, softening the spice into something sticky and warm, with a barely-there white floral thread that mostly serves to round the edges. Then the base does the work the name promises: coffee, dark and slightly bitter, layered over vanilla, tonka, benzoin and musk. The coffee is roasted rather than milky, and it stops the vanilla from becoming syrup.

The original Khamrah is broadly accepted as an interpretation of Kilian Angels' Share, and Qahwa inherits that DNA while diverging from it. The Kilian is cognac and cinnamon over praline; Qahwa adds a coffee accord that Angels' Share does not have. So it is a flanker of a dupe rather than a copy of anything, and if you specifically want the Kilian profile, the standard Khamrah gets closer.

Performance is excellent. Eight to ten hours is common, with a projection bubble that fills a room for the first several. This is a fragrance you under-apply. Two sprays in cool weather, one in heat. In a Durban December it will overwhelm; on a cold Cape winter evening it is close to perfect.

It is unisex in practice, worn heavily by both men and women, and it suits people who want warmth, spice and sweetness together. Evenings, winter, occasions. Anyone who finds gourmands cloying should keep clear.

The reception has been remarkable. Khamrah Qahwa holds a 4.35 average across more than 15,000 Fragrantica ratings and was named among the winners of the Fragrantica Readers' Choice Awards for 2024, following the original Khamrah's Best Middle Eastern Perfume win the year before. That level of community endorsement for a fragrance in this price bracket is unusual, and it is a large part of why the whole Khamrah family became so widely worn.
