Lattafa Perfumes
The undisputed king of affordable luxury — Fragrantica's most popular brand
Lattafa is the Dubai-based perfumery that turned Khaleeji fragrance into a global obsession. Founded in 1980 by Sheikh Shahid Ahmad and his co-founder Shoaib Iqbal, the brand spent its first three decades quietly serving the GCC market before TikTok turned scents like Khamrah, Yara, and Asad into worldwide phenomena. Today Lattafa exports to over 120 countries and has become the entry point for an entire generation discovering Arabian perfumery for the first time.
The Founder's Story
Sheikh Shahid Ahmad arrived in Dubai from Pakistan in the late 1970s and spent thirteen years working at his uncle's perfume shop in the city's traditional bazaars. During that decade he watched the UAE market closely and noticed something everyone else seemed to miss: Western fragrance was overwhelming the region, even though local taste leaned hard toward the rich, long-lasting Arabian compositions of frankincense, oud, amber and rose. He saw the gap, partnered with Shoaib Iqbal in 1980, and started building a brand that would eventually run the gap in reverse — sending Arabian perfumery out to a Western audience that didn't yet know it wanted it. Three generations of the Sheikh family now run the company.
Heritage & Timeline
The name Lattafa is drawn from the Arabic words Latif (gentle) and Lateefa (pleasant) — qualities the founders wanted to anchor the brand identity in. The company spent its first decade serving the UAE market directly, then expanded across the GCC through the 1990s and 2000s. The global pivot came in 2012 with a deliberate push beyond the Middle East. The TikTok inflection point hit around 2022-2023 — Khamrah, marketed as a Kilian Angels' Share interpretation at a fraction of the price, went viral and pulled the rest of the catalogue into the global spotlight. Lattafa now owns sub-brands including Maison Alhambra, Asdaaf, Rave, and Vurv, each targeting a slightly different audience segment.
Signature Style
Lattafa specialises in warm, sweet, oriental-leaning compositions — the family heart of traditional Khaleeji perfumery rebuilt for global wear. The brand's signature is high oil concentration and high projection: a Lattafa scent at R400 will commonly out-project a designer fragrance at R3000. The aesthetic ranges from gourmand (Khamrah, Yara, Eclaire) to bold aromatic-spicy (Asad, Honor & Glory) to deep oud (Bade'e Al Oud). Bottles lean ornate — gold caps, jewelled accents — signalling luxury at accessible pricing. The brand's philosophy is openly stated: world-class scent should not require a designer-tier budget.

About Lattafa Perfumes
Lattafa Perfumes has become the most talked-about fragrance brand in South Africa — and with good reason. Founded in the UAE, Lattafa has mastered the art of creating high-concentration, long-lasting fragrances using premium Middle Eastern ingredients at prices that make designer houses look absurd.
In South Africa, Lattafa's popularity has exploded thanks to TikTok, Fragrantica community ratings, and word-of-mouth from perfume enthusiasts who discovered that a R300 bottle of Khamrah outperforms many R2,000+ designer fragrances in our dry Highveld climate. The brand's use of real amber resins, natural musks, and concentrated oud accords means their fragrances are engineered for heat — exactly what South African conditions demand.
Whether you're a seasoned collector or buying your first "good" perfume, Lattafa offers an entry point into luxury fragrance that doesn't require a luxury budget.
