Diptyque
Parisian artisanal fragrance since 1961
Founded in 1961, Diptyque began as a home décor boutique on Paris's Boulevard Saint-Germain before introducing scented candles in 1963 and eau de toilettes in 1968. Three founders — a British painter, a French set designer, and a French interior designer — created a brand that blurs the line between fragrance and fine art. Estimated €400-500 million in revenue.
The Founder's Story
Desmond Knox-Leet (a British painter), Christiane Montadre-Gautrot (a French set designer), and Yves Coueslant (a French interior designer) opened a small boutique at 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris in 1961. Initially selling fabrics and objets d'art, they began creating scented candles in 1963 and launched their first eau de toilette, L'Eau, in 1968. The founders' artistic backgrounds gave Diptyque a unique identity: fragrance as an extension of the visual arts.

Signature Style
Diptyque's aesthetic is rooted in the founders' artistic backgrounds — each fragrance and candle is treated as a work of art. The oval label, hand-drawn lettering, and nature-inspired compositions create a brand that feels intellectual and bohemian rather than commercially polished.
