Diptyque did not begin as a perfume house at all. In 1961 Desmond Knox-Leet, Christiane Gautrot and Yves Coueslant took a Paris address on boulevard Saint-Germain, sold upholstery fabrics they had drawn themselves, and imported English perfumery that France barely knew at the time. That furnishings-shop origin explains a great deal about the brand's later scents: they behave like objects and interiors rather than like seduction devices. Philosykos arrived in 1996 and is the fig fragrance against which every other fig fragrance is still measured. Olivia Giacobetti is commonly named as its author, although Diptyque leaves the bottle uncredited. The house does tell the story: a recollection of a summer at Mount Pelion in Greece, a wild grove of fig trees you had to walk through to reach the sea. Diptyque's own listing is unusually spare, naming fig leaves, fig tree sap, fig tree wood and black pepper. Fragrantica reduces it further, to fig, fig leaf and fig tree, which is really the same statement made twice. What makes it remarkable is that it smells like the whole tree and not the jam. The opening is green and slightly bitter, all crushed leaf and warm bark, with a peppery prickle that stops it going soft. Underneath sits the milky, coconut-adjacent lactonic quality of fig fruit, but restrained, never dessert-like. The drydown is dry white wood, faintly resinous, with the leaf still visible. It has almost no sweetness for a fruit scent, which is exactly why it has aged so well while gourmand figs from the same era now smell dated. Heat is where it belongs, in the most literal sense. On the KwaZulu-Natal coast in humid February it works better than almost anything, because the green bitterness reads as cool rather than heavy. It is genuinely shared, worn as easily by men as by women. Be realistic about performance. This is the eau de toilette, the airier of the two concentrations Diptyque offers, and it is a quiet, close, four-to-six-hour scent that lives near the skin. Wearers who want reach should know the eau de parfum exists and pushes harder. Neither is discontinued. Longtime users report the current eau de toilette as slightly cleaner and less coconut-heavy than 1990s bottles, a change consistent with ingredient reformulation rather than any announced change of formula.

Spray the heavier scent first, then the lighter one on top. Start with two scents — more than three quickly becomes muddled. Always test on skin first.

AI Review Summary

Synthesised from fragrance data

Philosykos is a love letter to the fig tree in its entirety — crisp fig leaf and a quiet peppery lift up top, a milky green sap heart, and a clean cedar-and-wood drydown that ties it all together with understated elegance. It wears close to the skin with moderate sillage and longevity, so don't expect it to announce itself across the room, but that restraint is precisely what makes it feel refined rather than loud. Community sentiment sits at a modest 4.1, suggesting it won't win over those who want projection or complexity, but for the right person it's quietly captivating. It's a brilliant warm-weather companion — think a lazy Sunday braai or a long alfresco lunch where you want to smell fresh and polished without competing with the food or the conversation. If you're drawn to green, naturalistic scents that feel like something you'd find rather than buy, this one is worth trying on skin before committing.
