REPLICA is the most conceptually coherent fragrance line any fashion house currently runs. Maison Margiela built it on a single idea borrowed from its own atelier practice: the house had long reproduced garments from other eras and labelled them plainly with what they were, and the perfumes do the same thing with memory. Each bottle carries an apothecary-style label naming a place and a moment, and the brief for the perfumer is to reconstruct a remembered smell rather than to invent an abstract one. It is a rare case of a marketing concept that actually disciplines the perfumery. Under the Lemon Trees, released in 2018, chases the smell of shade in a citrus grove. Not lemon the fruit, which is the obvious move, but the air underneath the tree. The composition opens on lime, petitgrain and cardamom, and petitgrain is distilled from citrus leaves and twigs rather than peel, so the effect is bitter, green and woody instead of juicy. The heart is the interesting part, green tea and maté with coriander, which introduces a dry, dusty, slightly herbal quality that reads convincingly like warm leaves and hot ground. White musk, cedar and rock rose finish it, adding a clean, resinous warmth that stops the whole thing evaporating. Nothing here is sweet. That restraint is what makes it feel like a place rather than a perfume. It is casual, unisex and daylight-oriented, made for weekends, travel, linen and heat. On a humid coastal morning it is far more comfortable than a conventional citrus cologne because the maté and cedar give it something to hold onto. It is also easy to wear around other people, which is not true of much of the Margiela range. Performance is modest and should be understood before purchase: four to six hours with light projection after the first thirty minutes. That is the nature of a green citrus built this way. Spray generously, include your shirt, and accept it as a fragrance you top up. No perfumer is named for this release. Because the maison's perfume site cannot be retrieved programmatically, the note list above is drawn entirely from independent fragrance databases, with nothing quoted from the brand.

AI Review Summary

Synthesised from fragrance data

Bright and breezy, *Under the Lemon Trees* opens with a convincing burst of lemon, grapefruit, and bergamot that genuinely evokes a sun-drenched citrus grove — it's the kind of scent that makes you feel clean and optimistic without trying too hard. The green tea and thyme heart keep things interesting, adding a slightly herbal, aromatic edge that stops it from being a one-dimensional citrus spray. Unfortunately, the low rating reflects what many find to be its biggest shortcoming: the whole thing fades fairly quickly and sits close to the skin, so don't expect it to carry you through a full day in the Joburg heat. It's best worn as a light, carefree option for warm-weather mornings — think weekend breakfast on the stoep or a casual coastal outing — rather than a signature scent you rely on. If longevity matters to you, apply it to moisturised skin or layer it over an unscented body lotion to coax a little more life out of it.
