Jo Malone built her business out of a facialist's practice in London, mixing scents for clients who kept asking what she had used on them, and Lime Basil & Mandarin is the fragrance that turned that into a house. Jo Malone London says so itself, in as many words: you never forget your first love, ours was Lime Basil & Mandarin, a modern classic that proves even the most unconventional marriages can stand the test of time. Fragrantica credits Jo Malone herself as its perfumer. Estee Lauder acquired the brand in 1999, Jo Malone left it in 2006, and she later founded a separate house, Jo Loves, under her own name.

The unconventional marriage in question is basil against citrus. The brand's own note breakdown is mandarin and lime at the top, basil in the heart and amberwood at the base, while Fragrantica adds thyme, lilac, iris, vetiver and patchouli to fill in the picture. In practice it opens as a very clean, very tart lime, more zest than juice, with mandarin softening the acid. Then the basil arrives, herbaceous and peppery, and does something citrus alone never does: it makes the fragrance smell green and slightly bitter, like a kitchen garden after rain. Thyme reinforces that, iris quietly powders the middle, and the close is a dry, woody vetiver and patchouli with a warm amberwood hum.

It is one of the most reliably wearable fragrances in existence and it is unisex by default rather than by marketing. On a humid Durban morning it does exactly what a cologne should, which is to make the heat feel less close. It is also the classic layering base in the house's own Fragrance Combining approach, and it sits well under almost anything woody.

The honest part is longevity. This is a cologne concentration and it behaves like one: three to five hours, with the lime gone inside forty minutes and the woody base doing most of the work. Reapplication is expected rather than a failure. It has been in the line continuously for decades, and while formulas of that age inevitably shift, the house has announced no reformulation.
