Maison Francis Kurkdjian is the French niche house co-founded in 2009 by perfumer Francis Kurkdjian and business partner Marc Chaya. Kurkdjian was already a celebrated perfumer — creator of Jean-Paul Gaultier Le Mâle (1995) at the age of 26 — when he launched his own brand. His house's 2015 launch of Baccarat Rouge 540, originally a limited-edition collaboration with the crystal house Baccarat, became the most influential fragrance of the late 2010s. LVMH acquired a majority stake in 2017; Kurkdjian was appointed Chief Perfumer of Christian Dior in 2021 while continuing to lead his own house.
The Founder's Story
Francis Kurkdjian was born in Paris in 1969 to Armenian parents. He trained at the prestigious ISIPCA perfumery school, then joined Quest International (now Givaudan) where he composed Jean-Paul Gaultier Le Mâle in 1995 — at just 26, making him one of the youngest perfumers to compose a global commercial fragrance. He worked extensively as a contract perfumer through the late 1990s and 2000s, with credits including Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile, Burberry London, and Lanvin Rumeur. In 2009 he co-founded his own house with Lebanese entrepreneur Marc Chaya. The brand was acquired by LVMH in 2017; Kurkdjian was appointed Chief Perfumer of Christian Dior in 2021.

The compositions are typically built on a single distinctive material — Baccarat Rouge's saffron-ambroxan-jasmine accord; Aqua Universalis's white-floral cleanliness; Grand Soir's vanilla-amber warmth — rather than dense multi-material layering. Bottles are simple rectangular flacons with restrained branding. The brand operates without celebrity marketing or social campaigns, relying instead on word-of-mouth driven by the strength of Baccarat Rouge 540's olfactory signature. Kurkdjian's parallel role as Chief Perfumer at Dior since 2021 has not slowed MFK's release cadence.
