Cardamom arrives first, green and slightly soapy, followed almost immediately by the composition's most distinctive element: a dry, tannic black tea note that smells like the leaves before water is added. Fig sits alongside, contributing a milky, green-skinned sweetness rather than fruit sugar. It is an unusual and quietly sophisticated opening. The heart brings iris, powdery and cool, with vetiver adding a dry earthiness and labdanum introducing the first real warmth. Where the fragrance becomes very comfortable is the dry-down, when creamy sandalwood, vanilla and tonka soften everything into a warm, skin-like woodiness with patchouli grounding it underneath. The overall effect is of expensive skin rather than perfume.

This reads as unisex with a slight masculine tilt, and it suits people who want something refined rather than attention-seeking. It works best in cooler weather and transitional seasons, and it is one of the safer choices for an office or a smart dinner. Cape winter evenings suit it particularly well.

Performance is good rather than exceptional. Seven to nine hours is normal, with moderate projection in the first two hours before it becomes a close, intimate scent. That intimacy is part of the appeal, but anyone wanting a room-filler should look elsewhere.

The clone claim here is well founded: Liam Grey is Lattafa's interpretation of BDK Parfums Gris Charnel, and the note lists line up almost exactly, with black tea, fig and cardamom over iris, vetiver and sandalwood. Reviewers who own both consistently confirm the DNA. The differences show in the middle and the finish. Gris Charnel has a smoother, creamier sandalwood and a more seamless blend; Liam Grey is sweeter, pushes the vanilla and tonka harder, and its tea note is less nuanced. It is a recognisable and useful version of the original rather than a replacement for it, and given the price difference, that is a reasonable outcome.

Sitting at 4.28 across roughly 4,500 Fragrantica ratings, it is one of the better-regarded fragrances Lattafa has released, and deservedly so.

AI Review Summary

Synthesised from fragrance data

Liam Grey is the kind of scent that makes people lean in and ask what you're wearing without ever being loud about it — a smooth, creamy iris built around ripe fig, airy tea, and a velvety sandalwood base that feels genuinely sophisticated. The lactonic quality gives it a soft, skin-like warmth rather than anything sweet or powdery, and the bergamot up top keeps it feeling clean and polished rather than heavy. Fans of BDK Gris Charnel will find a lot to love here, with the community rating of 8.6 backing up what the nose already suspects — this punches well above its price point. With moderate sillage and impressive 8 to 10 hour longevity, it's an ideal choice for the office or a dinner date where you want to smell considered and expensive without overwhelming the room. Reach for this one in autumn and winter when that creamy iris warmth really comes into its own.
