Cinnamon and nutmeg lead, dusty and warm, with just enough bergamot behind them to stop the opening from smelling purely like a spice cupboard. What happens next is the reason this fragrance sold in the numbers it did. Dates arrive, jammy and dark and genuinely fruit-like, joined by praline for a nutty caramel sweetness and tuberose for a creamy floral lift that most people never consciously identify. From there it deepens steadily into vanilla, tonka bean and amberwood, with myrrh and benzoin adding a resinous, slightly incense-like edge that keeps the sweetness anchored. It smells like spiced fruit cake, and it does so with more nuance than that description suggests.

The comparison everyone makes is By Kilian Angels' Share, and it is a genuine family resemblance rather than a copy. Angels' Share is built around a realistic cognac accord with oak; Khamrah has no true boozy note and leads instead with dates and heavy cinnamon. Side-by-side testers typically put the similarity around seventy to seventy-five percent, with Khamrah clearly sweeter and less refined but substantially louder and longer-lasting. Given that Angels' Share sells for several hundred dollars and Khamrah for a small fraction of that, the trade is one most people are happy to make.

This is cold-weather wear. Winter evenings, dinners, a night out, the sort of Highveld June evening where the air is dry and cold and holds scent well. In summer humidity it turns heavy and syrupy fast. It is unisex in practice, worn widely by both men and women, and skews toward people who like to be noticed.

Performance is extreme by any standard. Ten hours and upward is normal, projection is room-filling for the first several hours, and clothing carries it for days. One or two sprays is a full application and most people learn that the hard way. That intensity, combined with the price, is why Khamrah passed 29,000 Fragrantica ratings and became one of the defining fragrances of the recent Middle Eastern boom. It is also why it is now so commonly worn that some buyers avoid it on those grounds alone.

Spray the heavier scent first, then the lighter one on top. Start with two scents — more than three quickly becomes muddled. Always test on skin first.

AI Review Summary

Synthesised from fragrance data

Khamrah opens with a confident hit of cinnamon and nutmeg before settling into a gloriously sticky heart of dates and praline — it's the kind of oriental gourmand that feels grown-up rather than sugary, thanks to the tuberose and resinous base of myrrh, benzoin and tonka bean grounding all that sweetness. The dry-down is where it really earns its cult status on Fragrantica, wrapping you in a creamy, woody glow that lasts well beyond 10 hours and announces itself in a room before you do. For the price — comfortably under R1,000 — the performance is frankly embarrassing to more expensive alternatives. This one is made for cooler months and evening occasions: a dinner date, a winter braai, or any setting where you want presence without saying a word. If bold spice and warm sweetness are your thing, Khamrah is an easy yes.
