Kilian Hennessy grew up among the oak barrels of his family's cognac cellars in south-west France, and the smell of those vaults is the origin story he tells for almost everything he has made. Angels' Share, released in 2020, is the one where he addressed it head on. The name translates la part des anges, the portion of cognac that evaporates through the oak during ageing and is lost to the air. In his own words on the brand's site, he very often has the feeling that the smell of those cellars lives in almost all of his scents.
Kilian Paris credits Benoist Lapouza with the composition, which is worth noting because unlike several of the houses on this site, it does publish its perfumers. The official pyramid is spare: cognac at the top, oak and cinnamon at the heart, tonka bean and sandalwood at the base. The detail beyond that adds praline and a candied almond facet, and that is what most people notice. The cognac accord is boozy and warm for perhaps twenty minutes, then it settles into something closer to a dessert, with toasted almond, vanilla and cinnamon over a woody dryness that stops the whole thing collapsing into sugar.
It is among the most-reviewed fragrances in modern niche perfumery for good reason. It is easy to like and almost impossible to mistake for anything else. It is also unmistakably a cold-weather scent, suited to a Cape winter evening, a fire, a coat. In coastal humidity it becomes heavy and a little sickly within the hour.
Performance is excellent. Ten hours or more on skin with strong projection through the first three is typical, and it lasts far longer than that on wool. Two sprays is the sensible ceiling and most people learn that the hard way.
Hennessy founded the house in 2007. The range has grown a long way past that first collection, and the brand now belongs to The Estée Lauder Companies. Angels' Share has become a small family of its own, joined in The Liquors collection by Angels' Share Paradis and Angels' Share on the Rocks.

Spray the heavier scent first, then the lighter one on top. Start with two scents — more than three quickly becomes muddled. Always test on skin first.
AI Review Summary
Synthesised from fragrance data
Angels' Share opens with a confident hit of cognac and warm cinnamon that genuinely smells like cracking open something expensive, before settling into a creamy, nutty heart of tonka bean, hazelnut, and praline that feels indulgent without tipping into candy territory. The dry down is where it earns its reputation — vanilla, sandalwood, and benzoin create a smooth, ambery trail that clings to skin and fabric for well over 10 hours with sillage strong enough to leave a room knowing you were there. It's a bold, unapologetically rich oriental that suits cooler South African evenings perfectly, whether that's a winter dinner in the Winelands or a late-night date in the city. Save this one for after dark — it's far too much personality for a Monday morning meeting, but absolutely right for any occasion where you want to be memorable.
