The 60-Second Answer

Musamam Black Intense is a 2025 Woody Aromatic Eau de Parfum by Lattafa Perfumes, composed by perfumer Jordi Fernández. It opens with lavender, nutmeg, sage and bergamot, moves through a heart of geranium, cedarwood and Givaudan’s captive Cocoa Pulse, and dries down on maple wood, patchouli and tonka bean. Community-rated 4.30/5 on Fragrantica, it lasts 8–10 hours and projects loudly for the first two. In South Africa it retails between R789 and R899 — with Rio Perfumes the recommended stockist.

🐍 The Venom in the Name

Lattafa Musamam Black Intense matte-black flacon coiled by a black cobra

In Arabic, مسمم (Musammam) means “poisoned” — or, more romantically, “venomous.” That’s the word Lattafa chose. Not “noir.” Not “intense.” Venom. And the bottle answers it: a matte-black flacon strangled by a coiled cobra whose fangs rest just above the cap. This isn’t decorative — it’s a warning.

Lattafa began in 1980 as a small Sharjah house crafting Middle-Eastern attars. Four decades later they’re the most disruptive force in accessible luxury fragrance. For Black Intense they didn’t clone anyone — they partnered with Givaudan on a proprietary captive called Cocoa Pulse, a fusion of cocoa butter and Akigalawood™. That single ingredient is why this fragrance doesn’t smell like anything else you’ve owned.

🧪 Layer With Musamam

Musamam is a heavyweight, but three tested pairings soften or extend it beautifully.

+ Lattafa Yara

Sweet vanilla lift for date night. Yara on pulse points, Musamam on clothes.

+ Bergamot cologne

Cools the opening for daytime office wear. Apply cologne first.

+ Oud attar

Doubles down on the dark. For winter evenings only.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Is Musamam Black Intense a clone of anything?

No — Lattafa didn’t clone. Reviewers compare it to YSL M7 (discontinued), Calvin Klein Defy Parfum (shared cocoa DNA), and Mugler A*Men Fantasm, but the Givaudan Cocoa Pulse captive makes it genuinely original.

How long does it last on skin?

8–10 hours of wear, with the first two hours projecting loudly. On clothing it can last 24+ hours. Community-rated 88/100 for longevity.

Is it unisex?

Marketed masculine, but the Cocoa Pulse and gourmand base make it wearable by anyone. Fragrantica’s community gender-lean sits at roughly 70% male-leaning, 30% unisex.

What’s the best price in South Africa in 2026?

Perfume Shop currently has the best price at R700 with PayJustNow available. Most other SA retailers (Rio R750, DXB Scents R749, Scent Society R799) are sold out — this fragrance is moving fast. Note: Takealot stocks the original Musamam, not Black Intense.

Is it suitable for South African summers?

Best avoided in Durban or Joburg summer heat — it projects too heavily. Reserve it for winter evenings, cool-weather office days, and date nights.

Is it worth the price?

At R700–R850 for 100ml of a Givaudan-captive niche-tier composition, absolutely. Community value-rating: 86/100. With 5 of 7 SA retailers currently sold out, demand is clearly outstripping supply — grab it while Perfume Shop still has stock.
