Carolina Herrera showed her first collection in 1981 at New York's Metropolitan Club, encouraged by Vogue editor Diana Vreeland, and the house has treated fragrance as a serious discipline ever since; Carolina Herrera de Baez took over creative direction of its fragrance arm in 1996. Bad Boy, launched in 2019, was built as the deliberate counterweight to Good Girl. Where that bottle was a stiletto, this one is a lightning bolt in midnight blue glass, and the house says the shape stands for heroism and strength. More interesting is what the brief asked for: a rebuilt fougere, the structure that has carried men's perfumery since the 1880s, dragged somewhere darker. Unusually for a mainstream designer launch, Herrera's own press material names the perfumers, crediting Quentin Bisch and Louise Turner rather than hiding them.

The house lists bergamot with pink and white pepper on top, cedarwood and clary sage at the heart, and tonka bean with cocoa in the base over an amber wood note. In practice the pepper does most of the early work, dry and prickly rather than citrus-sweet, and the bergamot reads as brightness rather than as lemon. Clary sage keeps the middle herbal and slightly bitter, which is the fougere bone showing through. Then the cocoa arrives, and it is the whole point of the fragrance: unsweetened, closer to a cacao nib than a dessert, wrapped in tonka so it turns creamy without turning edible. Cedar keeps it upright.

It is an after-dark scent and it does not pretend otherwise. Three or four sprays is a statement in a warm room; two is plenty for dinner. It suits a cool Highveld winter evening better than a February afternoon, because heat pushes the cocoa and tonka forward fast and they can turn cloying on skin that is already warm.

Performance is one of its selling points. Eight hours or more is routine; the opening pair are forceful, and the trail on clothing lasts far longer. This is a modern formula built on ambroxan-style woody amber materials, so it has not been through the reformulation cycles that hollowed out older fougeres, and current bottles smell as they did at launch. Stronger concentrations have followed, but the first eau de toilette is still what everything else gets measured against.

Spray the heavier scent first, then the lighter one on top. Start with two scents — more than three quickly becomes muddled. Always test on skin first.

AI Review Summary

Synthesised from fragrance data

Bad Boy opens with a confident crack of black and white pepper softened by bergamot, before settling into a warm, chocolatey base of cacao and tonka bean that's genuinely hard to ignore. The cedar and sage in the heart keep things grounded and masculine, stopping it from tipping into overly sweet territory. With heavy sillage and serious longevity, a couple of sprays is all you need — any more and you risk overwhelming the room. It's a fragrance built for cooler evenings, think winter dinners or a night out in the city, where that spicy-sweet trail can do its thing without the heat muddying it. Community ratings sit at a modest 4.1, suggesting it's polarising rather than universally loved, so if you're drawn to bold, attention-grabbing orientals it may well be your thing, but it's worth a skin test before committing at the R2,000-plus price point.
