John Varvatos Artisan Pure

John Varvatos spent years at Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein before opening his own American menswear label in 1999, and his fragrances have always reflected the same preoccupation: craft, texture and materials that look better worn in. The Artisan line, introduced at the end of the 2000s, took that literally, housing the juice in a bottle wrapped in woven cording that mimics hand-braided leather. Artisan Pure arrived in 2017 as the cleanest, most stripped-back member of that family, and it is commonly attributed to Rodrigo Flores-Roux, a Givaudan perfumer with a particular reputation for citrus and for Latin American botanical references.

The construction is classic and unfussy. Clementine, lemon, mandarin and bergamot open it, and Flores-Roux does something clever by pairing that citrus with thyme and marjoram rather than the usual lavender or mint. Those herbs are dry, savoury and slightly dusty, and they give the opening a kitchen-garden realism that most fresh masculines lack. Petitgrain follows, adding the bitter green twiggy side of the orange tree, with ginger providing a warm, gently spicy prickle. The base is quiet by design: soft woods, orris root and musk with a little amber, where the orris contributes a powdery, slightly carroty smoothness that keeps the drydown from becoming generic. Pure is the right word for it. There is no smoke, no sweetness and no attempt at seduction.

It is a hot-weather working fragrance above all. A dry Karoo afternoon is precisely where it makes sense: it smells clean without smelling of laundry detergent, and it never becomes heavy. It is also a good option for men who find most current masculines too sweet.

Be realistic about longevity. This is an eau de toilette dominated by citrus and herbs, and it wears like one, giving four to five hours with the last two very close to the skin. Reapplication is part of the deal. The larger caution is availability: John Varvatos Enterprises restructured through bankruptcy proceedings in 2020, and distribution of the fragrance line has been uneven since, with the brand's own site no longer a reliable source of product information. The formula itself has not been meaningfully changed, but supply is inconsistent and worth verifying.
