Alien arrived in 2005 as Mugler's second pillar after Angel, and where Angel was a gourmand argument, Alien was a jasmine one: a single flower pushed to an almost synthetic intensity over amber and wood. Alien Hypersense, released in 2024, is the house's attempt to open that idea up. Mugler credits Dominique Ropion, one of the most respected perfumers working in the mainstream, and describes the result as a rebirth of Alien built around three revelations rather than a conventional pyramid.

Those three stages are what the house publishes. Green mandarin and a juicy pear accord open it; jasmine sambac forms the heart, which Mugler states is grown in the house's own sustainably farmed field in India; and cashmeran closes it as an ambery wood. On skin, the difference from the original is immediate. The pear is crisp and slightly green rather than candied, and the mandarin keeps the first half hour bright and airy in a way classic Alien never was. The jasmine still dominates the middle, but it is softer and more natural here, with the indolic, almost medicinal edge of the original dialled back. Cashmeran gives the base its warm, faintly musky, slightly powdery hum, joined by clean musks, amberwood and a driftwood dryness that keeps it from going too sweet.

It is a far more flexible fragrance than its predecessor and it works in daylight, which the original really does not. On a humid Durban afternoon it stays diffusive instead of turning syrupy. It suits anyone who likes big white florals but has found Alien itself too dense to wear before dark.

Two honest notes. First, longevity is good but not enormous by Alien standards, six to eight hours with most of the reach concentrated early, and long-time Alien wearers should sample rather than assume, because the sharper, heavier character they buy the line for has been deliberately softened. Second, this is a new release with a comparatively small pool of reviews so far, so the consensus around it is still forming. Mugler states that the bottle is born refillable and can be recharged from a 100ml cartridge.

AI Review Summary

Synthesised from fragrance data

Mugler's Alien Hypersense is essentially the original Alien reimagined for someone who loves the iconic jasmine DNA but finds the classic a little too intense for everyday wear — the elemi resin and bergamot opening gives it a brighter, almost citrusy freshness that the original never had. Jasmine sambac is still firmly at the heart, but tuberose and ylang-ylang soften it into something creamier and more wearable, before sandalwood and white musk bring it home in a noticeably lighter dry-down. At 8-12 hours with moderate-to-strong projection, it performs well without the full beast-mode of its predecessor, making it a far more versatile option for warmer climates. If you're in Cape Town or Durban heading into summer, this is the Alien you've been waiting for — reach for it on warm evenings when you want presence without overwhelming a room. Rated a solid 7.8, it won't replace the original for purists, but for those wanting something fresher and more contemporary, it absolutely earns its place in the flanker canon.
