Creed's own account places the house on Conduit Street in London in 1760, founded by James Henry Creed as a tailoring business, with seven generations of family behind it. That date is contested: independent researchers have never produced documentation of the perfume business anything like that far back, and the honest position is that 1760 is the house's story rather than a verified fact. What is not in doubt is what happened in 1985. Green Irish Tweed is the fragrance that turned Creed from an obscure Paris address into the reference point for expensive men's perfume, and it is still the house's best-known men's scent forty years on.

Creed credits no individual perfumer. Pierre Bourdon has said publicly that he composed it, and three years later he composed Davidoff Cool Water, which is why the two smell like close relatives with very different budgets. Creed's own note list runs peppermint, verbena, lemon, bergamot and galbanum at the head; geranium, lavender and violet at the heart; sandalwood, cedarwood, ambroxan and oakmoss in the base. The house ties the idea to the greenness of Ireland and to its stated long relationship with Linton Tweed Mills in Cumbria.

On skin it opens sharp and almost cold, mint and galbanum cutting through lemon, before violet leaf takes over and gives the middle that crushed-stem, slightly metallic green that everyone recognises. The dry-down is where the money shows: iris-adjacent powder, clean sandalwood, a faint salty ambergris warmth. It smells groomed rather than sporty.

This is the fragrance for a Cape winter morning, a collar and a coat, and it is wasted on a beach. Wear it to interviews, weddings and anything where you want to read as expensive without announcing it.

Two honest caveats. First, longevity is moderate by modern standards, around five to seven hours with polite projection after the first hour; some batches perform noticeably better than others, and batch variation is a long-running complaint among collectors. Second, oakmoss restrictions have changed what any 1980s fougere can legally contain, and current Green Irish Tweed is not identical to bottles from twenty or thirty years ago. It is still very good. It is simply no longer the same liquid.

AI Review Summary

Synthesised from fragrance data

Green Irish Tweed opens with a crisp, energetic hit of lemon verbena and peppermint that feels like a cool breeze over wet grass — clean, sharp, and immediately refreshing. The violet leaves soften things in the heart, lending an elegant, leafy smoothness before sandalwood and ambergris settle in with a quietly polished woody depth. Performance is genuinely impressive, with heavy projection and very long-lasting wear meaning two or three sprays will easily carry you through a full day. It's a brilliant choice for the office or a smart lunch during spring and summer, when that cool green freshness really comes into its own. The man who reaches for this regularly tends to value understated confidence over trend-chasing — and honestly, that's exactly the kind of bloke this fragrance was made for.
