Cristalle arrived in 1974, when Henri Robert held the in-house perfumer's chair at Chanel between Ernest Beaux and Jacques Polge. Chanel prints no perfumer credit, so treat that attribution as the documented record rather than a house statement. What is not in doubt is what the fragrance did. It was Chanel's answer to the green, sharp, lemon-and-moss style that ruled the early seventies, and it was more austere than anything the house had put out for women in decades. No aldehydes, no powder, no warmth. Just citrus, green florals and oakmoss.
Chanel's own copy still describes it in those terms: an opening of citrus freshness, green hyacinth softened by a honeysuckle accord, and a trail suffused with jasmine absolute. The lemon is Sicilian and genuinely bracing, close to bitter. Hyacinth follows, cool and faintly rubbery, before honeysuckle and jasmine round the edges. The drydown is a proper chypre floor of oakmoss and vetiver, dry and mineral rather than sweet.
The oakmoss question deserves a straight answer. Restrictions on oakmoss extract tightened significantly from the early 2000s and every classic chypre on the market has been reworked since. Chanel still lists Evernia prunastri, oakmoss extract, in Cristalle's published ingredients, but the current eau de toilette is a cleaner, brighter, less earthy fragrance than bottles from the seventies and eighties. If you have smelled a vintage one, expect a difference rather than a match.
It is a hot-weather fragrance in the best sense, something to reach for when the Highveld sits at thirty-two degrees and nothing sweet is bearable. It also works very well on men, whatever the label says.
Performance is its one real weakness and there is no point dressing it up. The eau de toilette runs four to six hours and projects for perhaps ninety minutes, because the citrus-green top is bright but volatile. Reapplication at lunchtime is normal rather than a failure. Chanel also sells Cristalle Eau Verte, a softer and greener eau de parfum reading of the same idea, for anyone who wants the character with less bite.
