Bleu de Chanel Parfum

There is a reason Bleu de Chanel became the default good-taste men's fragrance of the last fifteen years, and the Parfum is the version that explains it best. Olivier Polge, whom Chanel credits by name as its In-House Perfumer Creator, took over the house studio from his father and has shaped the Bleu line since. Chanel describes his signature for it plainly: a sandalwood signature, warm and sensual. The Parfum, launched in 2018, is where that signature stops being a suggestion and becomes the point of the fragrance. The house's own copy calls it the ultimate, most mysterious expression of Bleu de Chanel, a woody, ambery-aromatic scent with an intense trail.

It opens the way the whole line does, with lemon zest, bergamot, a cool mint edge and a bitter artemisia twist, but the citrus burns off faster here because there is more underneath it waiting. Lavender and geranium give the middle a groomed, slightly barbershop shape, cut with a green note and a curious flash of pineapple that keeps it from becoming stiff. What follows is the reason to buy this concentration rather than the eau de toilette: New Caledonian sandalwood, cedar, amberwood and tonka, dry and creamy at once, with enough Iso E Super to smear the edges and make the whole thing hang in the air.

It is a work fragrance for people whose work involves being taken seriously, and an evening one when you cannot be bothered to think. It handles a Highveld winter beautifully, where the cold air keeps the woods tight and legible, and it is arguably too warm for a humid summer night on the coast unless you drop to one spray.

Longevity is genuinely good, commonly eight to twelve hours on skin and considerably longer on fabric. Sillage is strong for the first two hours, then it settles into a dense, close aura that people notice when they are near you rather than across a room. The most common mistake is over-spraying because the opening seems light. Two sprays is a full dose. Three is a statement, and in a closed meeting room it will be read as one.
