No fragrance of the past decade has been more successful, or more argued about, than Sauvage. François Demachy created it for Dior in 2015, during his long tenure as the house's perfumer-creator, and Dior still frames it on its own site as an act of creation inspired by wide-open spaces — an ozone-blue sky over a white-hot rocky landscape. Whatever you make of the advertising, the composition is a genuine piece of craft, and its influence on masculine perfumery since has been enormous.

Dior is specific about one material in particular. Demachy selected a Calabrian bergamot and worked with local producers to shape it into a custom signature, and that peppery, unusually bitter citrus is what opens the fragrance and what separates it from imitators. Sichuan pepper and a broader spice accord sit alongside it, with lavender, geranium and resinous elemi giving an aromatic middle that most wearers register as a general freshness rather than as distinct notes. The base is where the fragrance became famous: ambroxan, which Dior describes as vivifying as ocean spray, over cedar and labdanum. Ambroxan is a powerful, slightly salty, mineral-woody material, and Sauvage uses it more prominently than almost anything before it. The drydown reads like sun-bleached driftwood — dry, warm, faintly sweet and very persistent.

It is close to the definition of an everyday fragrance, which is both its strength and the reason people tire of it. It works in Highveld heat, at the office, at a braai, on a first date. It is also worn by an enormous number of people, so if being distinctive matters to you, this is not the bottle.

Performance is excellent for an eau de toilette. Eight hours or more is typical, projection is strong for the first two or three, and it clings to clothing for days. Two sprays is genuinely sufficient and three is generous. Dior has since built out an eau de parfum, a Parfum and an Elixir, each progressively richer and sweeter, and refill formats for the 1 oz and 3.4 oz bottles. Worth adding, for context: Demachy left Dior in 2021 and Francis Kurkdjian now leads perfume creation at the house.

Spray the heavier scent first, then the lighter one on top. Start with two scents — more than three quickly becomes muddled. Always test on skin first.

AI Review Summary

Synthesised from fragrance data

Dior Sauvage EDT is one of those immediately legible scents — bergamot and pepper up front, clean lavender and geranium through the heart, and that signature ambroxan drydown that gives it a smooth, almost skin-like warmth for hours. It's bold without being heavy, and the sillage is strong enough that one or two sprays is genuinely all you need. Community consensus tends to land in "reliable crowd-pleaser" territory rather than "hidden gem," which is fair — it's not surprising, but it is consistently good. If you're after a versatile masculine that punches above its weight in presence, it earns its place in the rotation, particularly for office days or summer evenings when you want to smell effortlessly sharp without overthinking it.
