Sauvage has been the biggest men's fragrance in the world for most of the past decade, and Elixir, released in 2021, is the version that finally answered the people who found the original too simple. It was created by François Demachy, then the perfumer-creator at Dior, and it is the most concentrated and least conventional entry in the line.

Dior describes it as an extraordinarily concentrated fragrance steeped in the freshness of Sauvage, with a spiced heart, a tailor-made lavender essence and a blend of rich woods. Published note breakdowns fill in the specifics: nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom and grapefruit at the top, lavender at the heart, and liquorice, sandalwood, amber, patchouli and Haitian vetiver in the base.

The opening is where it separates itself. Instead of the bright ambroxan rush of the original, Elixir opens on a thick wave of spice, cinnamon and nutmeg first with the grapefruit only just visible behind them, and then drops into a lavender far denser than the herbal lavender most fragrances use. The liquorice in the base is the genuinely unusual part: dark, faintly aniseed, slightly sweet, and it gives the drydown a chewy quality with no real equivalent elsewhere in the Sauvage family. It is warm, thick and old-fashioned in the best sense, closer to a 1980s powerhouse than to a modern fresh scent.

Cold weather is essential. On a Highveld winter night it is excellent; in summer heat it becomes suffocating within minutes, and two sprays is genuinely the upper limit at any time of year. It is a men's fragrance by intent and mostly in practice, and it belongs to evenings rather than to offices.

Performance is enormous. Twelve hours on skin is normal. The first four are heavy going for anyone nearby, and the scent survives a wash cycle on clothing. Elixir is sold in smaller bottles than the rest of the range for good reason, since it is used a single spray at a time. Demachy retired from Dior in 2021, which makes this one of the last compositions he signed for the house before Francis Kurkdjian succeeded him as perfumer-creator.

Spray the heavier scent first, then the lighter one on top. Start with two scents — more than three quickly becomes muddled. Always test on skin first.

AI Review Summary

Synthesised from fragrance data

Sauvage Elixir is a bold, unapologetic statement fragrance that opens with a spiced grapefruit burst before settling into a rich, velvety core of cinnamon, cardamom, and dark licorice. The lavender heart keeps things from feeling too heavy, while the base of amber, sandalwood, and Haitian vetiver gives it that deep, creamy warmth that lingers for hours. Performance is seriously impressive — expect a heavy sillage and well over 12 hours of wear, so two sprays maximum is genuinely all you need. It's best suited to cooler months and evening occasions, where that intense oriental trail can really do its thing without overwhelming a room. If you're the kind of person who wants your presence felt before you've said a word, this one delivers exactly that.
