Ernest Beaux composed N°5 in 1921 and it has been in production ever since, which makes reinterpreting it a delicate job. Chanel gave that job to Jacques Polge, and in 2008 he produced Eau Premiere, described by the house plainly as a light, airy, luminous version of the now and forever fragrance. It is the rare flanker that justifies itself, because it solves a real problem: N°5 in full eau de parfum form is magnificent and, for a lot of people, unwearable before dark.

Polge kept the architecture and thinned the density. The aldehydes are still at the top, that unmistakable clean, waxy, faintly effervescent lift that makes N°5 recognisable within seconds, but they are softened, less like a starched collar and more like fresh laundry. Ylang-ylang from the Comoros, neroli, May rose and jasmine make up the heart, the same raw-material spine as the original arranged with more air between the elements. The base is vanilla, sandalwood and vetiver, warm and clean rather than heavy and animalic. What is missing, deliberately, is the deep musky weight that gives vintage N°5 its bite.

The result behaves well in heat. This is the N°5 you can wear through a Highveld summer without the composition collapsing into something too rich for the temperature. It also works for the office, for daytime, and for anyone who admires N°5 in principle but has always found it a little formal on their own skin. It is a floral aldehydic, not a light citrus, so it still reads as a proper perfume rather than a fresh spritz.

Two practical notes. First, despite the lighter framing, Eau Premiere is an eau de parfum. The transparency comes from the composition, not from a weaker concentration. Second, longevity is moderate: five to seven hours on most skin, with the trail drawing in close after the first two. That is less than N°5 Eau de Parfum by some margin, and it is the cost of the airiness. Buy from a stockist who turns stock over, because aldehydic compositions are the ones that show their age fastest in a warm cupboard.

✍️ Did You Know?

  • Chanel credits Jacques Polge with creating it in 2008 and describes it on its own site as a light, airy, luminous version of N°5
  • The original N°5 was composed by Ernest Beaux in 1921, so Eau Premiere is the house reinterpreting its own founding fragrance rather than a rival's homage
  • Chanel names Comoros ylang-ylang, May rose and jasmine in the heart, the same raw-material spine that underpins N°5 itself
  • It is sold as an eau de parfum despite the lighter positioning, so the transparency comes from the composition rather than from a weaker concentration
  • Chanel classifies it as floral aldehydic, keeping the aldehydes that make N°5 identifiable within seconds

AI Review Summary

Synthesised from fragrance data

Eau Première is essentially No. 5 with the volume turned down to a more approachable level — that signature aldehydic shimmer is still there, but it's airy and polished rather than commanding, letting the rose and jasmine heart breathe in a clean, genuinely feminine way. The dry-down is where it earns its keep, with iris lending a silky powdery softness, vetiver keeping things grounded, and vanilla and musk settling into something warm and skin-close. Performance is solid rather than spectacular, giving you a reliable 6 to 8 hours with moderate sillage that stays tasteful rather than filling the room. It's a brilliant choice for the office or a smart lunch out, particularly in autumn and winter when that gentle warmth in the base really comes into its own. If you've been curious about the Chanel floral-aldehydic world but found No. 5 a little too formal or full-on, this is a genuinely sensible starting point.
