Le Labo was created in 2006 in New York by Fabrice Penot and Edouard Roschi, two friends who had both worked inside the corporate fragrance industry and wanted to do the opposite of it. The house launched with ten fragrances and a candle, named each scent after its principal material and the number of ingredients in the formula, sold them from bare laboratory-style counters, and personalised every label. Estee Lauder bought the company in 2014, which changed the distribution and not much else.

Bergamote 22 was in that first release. Le Labo says its working code name during development was Fire Cologne, which tells you the intention: a citrus that burns rather than refreshes. The house does not publish a conventional pyramid but describes the composition directly, naming the delicate floral character of petit grain, the bitterness of grapefruit and the sweetness of amber and musk with what it calls a virile touch of vetiver. Specialist retailers and independent databases fill in bergamot, nutmeg, orange blossom, aspic and cedar. It is commonly attributed to Daphne Bugey.

The opening is a proper cologne, bright and slightly bitter, grapefruit peel and green petitgrain rather than sweet lemon. Where an ordinary cologne would then evaporate, this one thickens. Within twenty minutes the amber and musk come up underneath and hold the citrus in place, and vetiver gives the base a dry, rooty grip. It ends up smelling like clean skin an hour after a shower rather than like a bottle of anything.

That makes it one of the few citrus scents worth wearing in serious heat. A Highveld summer morning is exactly its brief: it reads fresh at nine and is still legible at three, which almost no cologne manages.

Expect six to eight hours with restrained projection; it sits close after the first hour by design, and it is the kind of fragrance people notice when they lean in rather than when you walk past. This is a niche eau de parfum in continuous production with no reformulation history worth flagging. The main caution is that the note list from independent sources is fuller than what Le Labo itself publishes, so treat the extended pyramid as a good approximation rather than a house document.

Layering Tip

Spray the heavier scent first, then the lighter one on top. Start with two scents — more than three quickly becomes muddled. Always test on skin first.

AI Review Summary

Synthesised from fragrance data

Bergamote 22 opens with a genuinely lovely burst of bergamot and grapefruit before settling into something more interesting — vetiver and oakmoss lend an earthy, grounded quality that stops it from reading as just another fresh citrus. It's polished and unisex in the best way, feeling clean without being cold, and sophisticated without demanding attention. Performance is moderate on both longevity and sillage, so it works best when you reapply mid-day or layer it over an unscented moisturiser to help it last. It's a natural fit for the office or a summer lunch, particularly during the warmer Highveld months when you want something light but not insubstantial. At its price point, it's a considered buy that suits those who genuinely love refined citrus-earthy blends rather than bold, statement-making scents.
