Ralph Lauren Polo Blue

Ralph Lauren's fragrance heritage starts with Polo in 1978, a dense green leather-and-pine construction by Carlos Benaim that won a FiFi award the following year and remains one of the most distinctive masculines ever put into a dark green bottle. Benaim was later named the first Master Perfumer at IFF. Polo Blue, released in 2003, is that lineage taken in the opposite direction: where the original was heavy, resinous and unmistakably 1970s, this is transparent, watery and unmistakably of its own decade.

Ralph Lauren publishes an unusually detailed breakdown for a fragrance of this age. The top is a cantaloupe melon accord, a cucumber accord, a watery melon accord and bergamot oil. The middle is an aquatic accord with clary sage, geranium and basil verbena oils. The base is a washed suede accord, patchouli heart and sheer musk. No perfumer is credited by the house.

That cucumber-melon opening is the signature, and it is what makes people either love the thing or dismiss it. It smells like cut cucumber and cold water rather than like fruit, clean and slightly vegetal, with bergamot keeping it from being flat. Basil and clary sage bring a herbal, faintly bitter edge through the middle that gives it more character than most aquatics of the era managed. The best part is the base: a soft suede accord over musk that reads as skin and worn leather rather than as marine chemistry, and it is what has kept the fragrance in production for over twenty years.

This is a hot-weather, daytime scent and it is genuinely good in a Highveld summer, where anything sweeter would turn. Office, gym bag, weekends.

Be honest about the performance. The eau de toilette is light by design and runs roughly four to six hours, the reach dropping away once the opening has passed. It is a reapplication fragrance. Ralph Lauren has released an eau de parfum version in 2016 and a parfum in 2022 that push the suede and musk harder and last considerably longer, which is the sensible route if longevity matters to you. As a mass-market fragrance running since 2003, batch differences over the years are to be expected, and the aquatic materials involved have been reworked more than once across the industry.
