Mancera places this in its Exclusif collection, four fragrances the house calls rare and unique perfumes combining elegance and singularity, crafted for true connoisseurs. It launched in 2018, and it is the vanilla in the range that behaves least like a vanilla, which is the reason to consider it over the more obvious options.

The house describes it as a summer afternoon in a secret garden, where a light breeze carries the softness of peach, jasmine and osmanthus, and golden vanilla adds warmth and comfort. Osmanthus is the note that makes it interesting. It is a Chinese flower that smells of apricot skin and dried leather, faintly tea-like, and it is almost never used at the opening of a gourmand. Here it arrives alongside white peach, whipped cream and brown sugar, which sounds like a dessert but reads as something fresher and slightly tart for the first half hour.

The heart turns floral rather than sweeter. Indian tuberose is a heavyweight, creamy and waxy and faintly mentholated, and it keeps the composition from collapsing into sugar. Violet adds a powdery lift and Egyptian jasmine a warm, indolic richness. Only in the base does the vanilla properly arrive: Madagascar vanilla, rounded with amber, sandalwood and white musk, with the woods giving it a dryness that most gourmands lack. The shape of the thing is a floral fragrance with a vanilla base rather than a vanilla fragrance with flowers on top, and the distinction matters if you have found other vanillas too foody.

It suits spring and autumn better than either extreme. On a warm Highveld October afternoon it is lovely; in deep winter it can feel slightly thin against heavier coats. It works as a daytime signature and is comfortable in an office in a way that most Mancera fragrances are not.

Performance is very good without being punishing: eight to ten hours, with projection that is strong for the first two hours and then settles close to the skin. That counts as moderate by this house's standards.
