Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb

Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren founded their label in the Netherlands in 1993 and spent their first decade making conceptual clothes that behaved like art installations. Their earliest fragrance gesture was a joke at the industry's expense: a bottle that could not be opened. Flowerbomb, released in 2005, was the real thing, and it is one of the very few designer launches of the 2000s that genuinely shifted the market. It took the sweet patchouli-vanilla structure that Angel had made possible and buried it under an enormous floral bouquet, creating a template that mainstream feminine perfumery has been working from ever since. Viktor&Rolf credits four perfumers on its own site, an unusually large and unusually distinguished team: Olivier Polge, Carlos Benaim, Domitille Michalon Bertier and Dominique Ropion.

The house talks about an explosion of a thousand flowers, and the composition is dense enough to justify it. Viktor&Rolf's own listing is short, so the fuller reading below is the widely published one. Tea, bergamot and osmanthus open with a slightly apricot-tinged brightness that lasts only minutes. The heart is the point: orchid, jasmine, rose, freesia and orange flower packed together so tightly that no single flower dominates, producing an abstract, jammy floral rather than a recognisable bouquet. Underneath, patchouli and vanilla do the heavy work, giving the sweetness its dark, slightly earthy anchor, with musk smoothing everything into a single glossy surface. The grenade-shaped bottle is not accidental; the fragrance is engineered to detonate.

It is unapologetically feminine and unapologetically loud. A Highveld spring evening suits it, and it has become a fixture at matric dances and weddings for exactly that reason. It is not an office scent, and it is not a subtle one.

Performance is excellent: eight to ten hours, forceful across the opening stretch, and fabric holds it. The main honest caution is oversaturation. Flowerbomb has been extended into a very large family, including Nectar, Extreme and Ruby Orchid among others, and the bottles are near-identical in silhouette, so check which one you are buying. As with any twenty-year-old commercial formula, it has been adjusted over time to meet changing ingredient restrictions, and long-term wearers report the current version reads slightly cleaner and less resinous than the earliest bottles, though the signature is intact.
