Aesop Tacit

Aesop built its name on skincare and on shopfits that look like small museums, so when the Melbourne house started releasing fragrance under its own label it had something to prove. Tacit, from 2015, is the composition that settled the argument. Aesop credits the perfumer Celine Barel and states the brief without drama: a fresh, vibrant and uplifting fragrance drawn from the vegetation and topography of the Mediterranean coast. That restraint is the whole point. Where most designer citrus scents shout, Tacit talks quietly and expects you to lean in. The house lists yuzu, Basil Grand Vert and clove at the opening, rosemary, mint and fennel through the heart, and cedarwood, vetiver heart and amber underneath. Fragrantica's shorter reading, yuzu and citrus over basil with vetiver and cloves below, agrees on the skeleton. What you actually smell is a yuzu that is more rind than juice, tart and faintly bitter, immediately shadowed by basil so green it reads almost raw. The clove is a whisper rather than a spice-rack thump, and it keeps the herbs from turning soapy. After twenty minutes the mint and fennel surface and the whole thing goes cool and stemmy, like a herb bed just after watering. The base is where Tacit earns its keep: dry vetiver, dusty cedar and a low amber warmth that stops the greenery going brittle. It never turns sweet, and it never turns into a cologne. This is a working fragrance rather than an evening one. It suits linen, open collars, studios, galleries, long lunches. On a January morning on the Highveld, before the afternoon storm stacks up, it is close to ideal: bright enough to register, never heavy enough to sit in a car with you. It reads unisex without effort, because nothing in it is coded either way, only clean and slightly severe. Performance is honest rather than heroic. Despite the eau de parfum label the composition is deliberately transparent, and most wearers report around seven hours: airy for the first sixty minutes, then tucked against the skin. Two sprays on skin outlast four on fabric. Aesop keeps Tacit in its permanent range and has announced no reformulation, though as with any citrus-led scent the opening is the first thing to suffer in a bottle left in the light. Keep it boxed and away from the window.
