Hermès Terre d'Hermès Eau Givrée

Sixteen years after Terre d'Hermès, Hermès asked what the same landscape smells like in cold air. Eau Givrée, which arrived in 2022, is Christine Nagel's answer, and the house frames it as an exploration of new territory where freshness and power interact. It is the rare flanker that argues with its parent rather than diluting it. Where the 2006 original is dry, warm and mineral, this one is glassy and cold, and it keeps the family's flint-and-cedar backbone running underneath the ice.

Hermès classes it as fresh and delicate and names four things: citron, juniper berry, Timut pepper, and the woody and mineral notes characteristic of Terre d'Hermès. Citron is not lemon. It is thicker-skinned, more bitter, far more peel than juice, and it opens with real bite. Juniper adds a gin-like resinous coolness, and Timut pepper, a Nepalese relative of Sichuan pepper, does the most interesting work: grapefruit-like, slightly numbing, faintly floral. Beneath all of it the familiar Terre floor of stone and dry wood stops the composition floating away. The effect is less a fresh fragrance than cold air moving over rock.

It is an eau de parfum, and that matters, because the concentration gives the icy opening something solid to stand on. It suits early starts and cool weather better than midsummer. A Cape winter morning is close to its natural habitat, though it also works as an antidote to heat if you enjoy the shock of something cold against a warm day. Office-safe, weekend-appropriate, and easier to wear than the more intense expressions of the line.

On performance, expect around six hours, with the first ninety minutes noticeably brighter than what follows. Projection is moderate: it sits within arm's length rather than filling a room, and the drydown is quiet, dry and woody rather than sweet. Some wearers find the citron fades faster than they would like, which is a fair criticism of almost every citrus-led eau de parfum ever made. Worth knowing before you commit: this is a Terre for people who already like Terre, and a genuinely different proposition for anyone who found the original too warm to wear.
