Aesop Hwyl is one of those fragrances that feels calm, composed, and quietly intriguing from the first spray. You get a brisk opening of cypress and thyme, sharpened by elemi, so it comes across as green, slightly resinous, and clean without ever feeling soapy. On skin, it quickly settles into the heart where the frankincense brings a dry, smoky glow, and the suede adds a soft, textured warmth that makes the whole scent feel more intimate. As it dries down, vetiver and moss take over, giving you that earthy, forest-floor finish that lingers beautifully for hours. It’s no surprise that people often compare it to Hinoki forests — there’s definitely that meditative, wood-panelled, temple-like mood running through it. The sillage sits in that polite middle ground, so you’ll notice it more when someone leans in than across the room, which makes it excellent for the office, a dinner date, or even a cool evening out when you want to smell considered rather than loud. At R1,000 to R2,000, it sits in premium territory, but the craftsmanship is clearly there.
