Aesop Hwyl

Aesop built its name in Melbourne on skincare, but its fragrance arm has quietly become one of the more interesting corners of contemporary perfumery, and Hwyl, released in 2017, is the clearest evidence. Aesop credits Barnabé Fillion on its own pages as the perfumer behind it, calling the scent the result of an ongoing collaboration with him, which is a rare piece of transparency from a house that could easily stay silent. The name is Welsh and resists tidy translation; Aesop leaves it unglossed, which suits a fragrance built on atmosphere rather than argument.

The house publishes its own note list: thyme, elemi and pink pepper over cypress, suede and geranium, resting on vetiver, frankincense and cedar. Aesop describes the effect as an ancient hinoki forest, mist above the treetops, damp soil, thick moss and soft bark, mineral deposits in a hot spring, complete stillness. That is close to how it actually wears. The opening is green and herbal rather than citrus-bright, the thyme reading almost medicinal for a few minutes before cypress takes over. The middle is where it earns its following, a cool resinous half-smoked wood that sits somewhere between a temple and a wet forest floor. Frankincense and vetiver carry the base, dry and faintly ashy, with the suede softening what would otherwise be austere.

This is not a boardroom fragrance or a summer wedding fragrance. It suits cold still weather and people who want scent to be an environment rather than an announcement, and Aesop genuinely pitches it at all genders rather than splitting the difference. A damp Cape winter morning is close to its natural habitat. Worn with wool, worn alone, it makes complete sense.

On performance, the eau de parfum projects moderately for the first hour, then draws in close to the skin and stays there for six to eight hours, considerably longer on a scarf or jacket. It is not a room-filler, and people who assume incense means force sometimes find it quieter than they expected. Aesop has announced no reformulation of Hwyl and the composition on shelf matches what the house published at launch. Skin chemistry matters here more than usual: on some wearers the smoke dominates within twenty minutes, on others the thyme and geranium stay legible for hours.
