Some fragrances earn their place by being clever. Allure Homme Sport earned its place by being useful. It appeared in 2004, midway through the tenure of Jacques Polge as Chanel's in-house perfumer, which ran from 1978 to 2015, and it is commonly attributed to him although no credit is printed. The brief was unglamorous: make a Chanel a man can wear to work, to the gym and to dinner without changing. Two decades later it is still one of the most-worn men's fragrances in the world, and the number of blue sport scents built on its template is its real legacy.

Chanel's own description calls it an energising woody fragrance balanced between freshness and sensuality, and the official note list is deliberately short: Italian mandarin at the top, a clean and intense cedar accord in the heart, tonka bean and white musk in the base. On skin there is more going on than that. The opening is bright and slightly salty, orange and blood mandarin cut with an aldehydic sparkle and a marine transparency that reads as air rather than seawater. Pepper and neroli sharpen the middle, then the whole thing warms downward into cedar, vetiver, elemi and a soft almond-tinged tonka. It never becomes sweet. That restraint is why it works in heat.

Which is exactly where it belongs in South Africa. This is a Highveld summer fragrance and a coastal one, the sort of thing that stays legible at thirty degrees when heavier ambers turn syrupy. It reads clean rather than fresh, and it flatters skin instead of masking it, which is why it survives gym bags and long days.

The honest caveat is longevity. This is an eau de toilette, and it behaves like one. Expect strong projection for the first ninety minutes, then a steady retreat to a close, musky-woody skin scent that lingers four to six hours in total on most people. Fabric holds it longer. Chanel has never published a reformulation history, and long-term wearers do argue about whether older bottles were richer, so judge by what is in the bottle in front of you.
