Alto Astral

Byredo has always been a house of restraint. The label has been run out of Stockholm since 2006, when Ben Gorham set it up around a stated preference for compositions built from few materials and named for feelings rather than for ingredients, and the results have generally been quiet, clean and slightly melancholy. Alto Astral, a 2025 release, fits that pattern. The name is a Brazilian Portuguese expression meaning good energy or high spirits, and the fragrance is unusually sunny for Byredo without ever becoming loud.

One transparency note first: Byredo's website is not publicly crawlable, so the note structure described here comes from the major independent fragrance databases rather than the house itself, and the perfumer credit is attribution rather than confirmation. Jérôme Epinette, a long-standing Byredo collaborator, is the name repeated across those databases; Byredo itself confirms nothing.

What the databases record is a genuinely interesting opening: coconut water and aldehydes. Not coconut flesh, not suntan oil — the thin, faintly saline, almost watery version of the note, lifted by aldehydes that give it a soapy sparkle and a clean, laundered brightness. The heart is musk, incense and jasmine, and the incense is the surprise, adding a dry smokiness that keeps the whole thing from being simply pleasant. The base is cashmeran, sandalwood and amber, which is where it turns soft, warm and slightly powdery. The overall impression is of skin after a swim: clean, warm, faintly smoky, more comforting than seductive.

That makes it a daytime fragrance and a warm-weather one. It suits humid coastal mornings particularly well, since there is nothing heavy in it to swell in the heat, and it works equally on anyone — Byredo does not gender its fragrances.

Performance is moderate. Musk-and-cashmeran compositions of this type tend to sit close and last longer than they project, and this one behaves accordingly: six to eight hours on skin, with the trail collapsing to arm's length within the first hour. Some people simply cannot smell cashmeran and heavy musks well on themselves, which is worth testing before committing. Byredo also sells the scent in body formats, so if you like the idea but want it softer still, that is the route.
