Bianco Latte

Think of milk simmered slowly with sugar until it thickens and starts to caramelise at the edges. That is essentially what Bianco Latte does, and it does it with only a handful of materials. Caramel leads, but it is a pale, milky caramel rather than a burnt or boozy one. Coumarin follows, bringing the sweet hay-and-almond warmth that also gives tonka its comfort, and honey adds a soft floral stickiness without any of the beeswax sharpness honey can have. The base is vanilla and white musk, and by the time you get there the fragrance has stopped being a list of notes and has simply become the smell of warm skin, clean bedding and something baking two rooms away. There is no cocoa, no coffee, no smoke. Its restraint is what separates it from the dozens of gourmands that followed. It is genuinely unisex, and unusually versatile for a sweet scent. Cape winter mornings suit it, but so does layering it under something heavier, and plenty of wearers use it as a comfort scent at home or in bed. Small children, oddly, love it. The honest caveat is performance. This is not a powerhouse. It projects for the first hour or so and then sits close to the skin, and most wearers get five to seven hours. It lasts far longer on clothing and scarves than on skin, so spray accordingly rather than emptying the bottle. There is no dupe conversation to have here, because Bianco Latte is the one being copied. Since it went viral it has become the benchmark that budget houses aim at whenever they release a milky vanilla, and several Middle Eastern brands have built entire lines on the idea. The original comes from a small Tuscan house that brands itself Since 1942, the year Silvia Martinelli's grandparents Giovan Piero and Emma Ducci opened a small shop of fragrances and ointments, Giovan Piero having trained in a pharmacy in Bibbiena. Martinelli is the house's co-founder and perfumer, she composed this one herself, and 2016 is the year she relaunched the brand. For a fragrance with five listed notes, it has accumulated a following most niche releases never approach.
