Black Opium Over Red

Black Opium has been Yves Saint Laurent's most important feminine fragrance since 2014, and its central trick was simple: put coffee where the vanilla would normally go. That coffee-and-white-flowers accord became the house signature, and every subsequent version has been a variation on it rather than a departure. Over Red is one of those variations, and YSL is direct about what changes — the coffee floral signature of Black Opium twisted with a juicy cherry accord, in the brand's own words, turning the original into something fruitier and, as the red lacquered bottle suggests, more overtly sweet.

One honest limitation is worth stating. There is no conventional top, heart and base pyramid published for this fragrance on YSL's own site, so none is asserted here. What the house does confirm is the framework. The signature black coffee accord remains, the white floral heart remains, and a liquorous cherry note is layered over both. YSL's own sustainability disclosures for the fragrance also reference a Bourbon vanilla premium infusion and a patchouli heart, which fits how it wears — the cherry is bright and almost syrupy at first, the coffee arrives underneath within minutes with its familiar bitter edge, and the drydown is warm, vanillic and slightly earthy rather than fruity. If you know the original Black Opium, this is recognisably the same fragrance with a red filter over it.

It belongs to evenings, and to cooler air. On a Cape winter night it behaves well; in humid summer the combination of cherry, vanilla and coffee can become heavy quickly, so a light hand pays. YSL positions it as feminine and it wears young.

Expect strong performance, as with the rest of the line: eight hours or more is normal and the trail is assertive for the first two or three. Two sprays is genuinely enough. It is sold in 10 ml, 30 ml, 50 ml and 90 ml, and the smallest size is the sensible way to find out whether the cherry reads as delicious or as cough syrup on your skin — this is a note that divides people sharply.
