Chanel No. 19 is one of those perfumes that doesn’t try to charm you with sweetness — it gets straight to the point, and that is exactly why it feels so iconic. On first spray, you get a sharp, green burst of galbanum with a clean snap of neroli and bergamot, almost like crushed stems and cool morning air on your skin. It can feel brisk at the start, but give it a few minutes and the heart opens into a beautifully powdery iris, softened by jasmine and rose, with a quiet narcissus and lily-of-the-valley nuance that keeps things elegant rather than girly. As it dries down, the leather, vetiver, cedar and sandalwood come through in a dry, slightly smoky way, with musk smoothing the edges.
