Daisy Wild

Marc Jacobs Daisy launched in 2007 with a white flower-capped bottle and a soft, slightly sour woody-floral inside, commonly attributed to Alberto Morillas. It became one of the defining fragrances of its decade for a particular reason: it smelled young without smelling sugary, at a moment when almost every other women's launch was reaching for fruit and caramel. Nearly twenty years and a long line of flankers later, Daisy Wild arrived in 2024 and did something the family had not tried before.

The idea is a tropical-green Daisy rather than a fruity one. The lead note is a banana flower accord, and it is worth being precise about what that means, because it is not banana. Banana blossom is vegetal, faintly milky, slightly bitter and green, closer to a heart of palm than to fruit. Jasmine sits underneath it and gives the middle a proper white-floral weight, joined by a macadamia accord that adds a soft, buttery nuttiness. The base is sandalwood and a dry vetiver, which is what keeps the whole thing from tipping into dessert.

The result reads as fresh and a bit strange on first spray, then settles into something warm, creamy and quite grown-up. It is more interesting than the Daisy name usually promises, and considerably less sweet than the current mainstream around it.

It works well in warmth, which is not true of most of the vanilla-heavy competition. A humid Durban afternoon suits the green-milky opening; the sandalwood keeps it from disappearing in the heat.

Performance is fair rather than remarkable for an eau de parfum: expect roughly four to six hours with moderate projection early and a close, skin-level dry-down after that. Reapplication is not unreasonable for a long day. Stronger concentrations have followed for anyone wanting more of the same accord.
