Gentleman is one of the older names in French men's perfumery. Hubert de Givenchy's house, founded in 1952, released the original Gentleman in 1974, a dense patchouli-and-leather composition that belonged unmistakably to its decade. What arrived in 2018 under the same name is not a flanker of that fragrance; it is a rebuild. Givenchy kept the title and threw out the formula, and the result is one of the more distinctive mainstream masculines of the last decade. It has not been reformulated in any announced way since 2018, but the Gentleman line has expanded considerably, so it is worth being precise about which one you are buying: the Eau de Parfum, the Boisée, the Réserve Privée and the separate Gentleman Society range are all distinct fragrances, not strengths of one another.
