When Christine Nagel took over as Hermès' house perfumer in 2016, one of her first public gestures was a cologne, and a strange one. Eau de Rhubarbe Écarlate joined the Colognes Hermès line that year with a single unfashionable idea at its centre: rhubarb, a vegetable stalk, treated as a perfume material. Hermès calls it an unexpected interpretation of the Hermès Cologne, one that revisits the surprising freshness of a herbaceous plant. Colognes are usually the safest corner of a house's catalogue. This one is not safe. It is sour, red and slightly startling, and that is the point.

The house files it as a fruity citrus and lists three things: crisp rhubarb, tangy lantana and elegant musk. The opening really does have the squeak of raw rhubarb, green and acidic and faintly sappy, with none of the sugar a pie would add. Red berries brighten it without turning it into a fruit compote, and lantana lends a small bitter-floral edge that keeps the whole thing from reading as juice. Then it quietly collapses into white musk, clean and skin-close, which is where it spends most of its life.

That trajectory tells you how to wear it. This is a splash-and-go fragrance in the classic cologne tradition. Generous application is expected, and the pleasure is concentrated in the first hour. Hermès makes a matching body lotion for precisely this reason. It is unisex without trying to be, and it is at its best in real heat, under the flat white glare of a Highveld afternoon, when anything ambery would feel like a coat you cannot take off.

Be honest about longevity. Two to four hours on skin is typical, less in wind, and projection is modest after the opening. That is not a flaw so much as a category. Eau de cologne concentration behaves this way and Hermès has never pretended otherwise. Carry the bottle if you want it all day. What you get in exchange is a scent almost nobody else around you is wearing, built by the perfumer Hermès brought in-house after a career composing for other maisons, and who spent her first years there on small, exact, slightly contrary ideas rather than blockbusters.

AI Review Summary

Synthesised from fragrance data

Rhubarb takes centre stage here in a way you might not expect — tart, crisp, and genuinely refreshing rather than sweet or jammy. The lantana adds a subtle green, almost weedy edge that keeps things interesting, while red berries and white musk soften the whole thing into something quietly elegant. It's an easy, uncomplicated wear that feels clean without being generic, though don't expect it to announce itself — the soft sillage and short longevity mean this one stays close to the skin and fades fairly quickly. For South African summers, it makes a brilliant morning spritz before heading into an air-conditioned office, and reapplying midday is genuinely worth it. If you love light, skin-close freshness and don't mind something understated, this is a lovely little find.
