Hermès H24 Eau de Toilette

For fifteen years Hermès had only one modern men's pillar, Terre d'Hermès. H24 arrived in 2021 as the second, and it was built by Christine Nagel, who succeeded Jean-Claude Ellena as the house's exclusive in-house perfumer. Nagel has described moving deliberately away from the conventional woodiness of masculine perfumery and working instead from an image of urban nature, of a green shoot forcing its way up through concrete. Whether or not that lands as poetry, it is an accurate description of what the liquid actually does.

The structure is deceptively short. Clary sage opens it, herbal and slightly bitter, sitting alongside Sclarene, a molecule drawn from clary sage that gives H24 its strange metallic shimmer, the quality people reach for words like hot iron or freshly pressed cotton to describe. Narcissus absolute forms the heart, green and hay-like and faintly animalic in the way narcissus always is, and rosewood closes it with a dry, almost transparent warmth. There is no fruit, no vanilla, no amber cushion. It is a fougère skeleton with the flesh removed, which is exactly why it divides people so sharply.

Hermès has since extended the idea into an eau de parfum and an Herbes Vives version, but the eau de toilette remains the clearest statement of the concept. It reads best on someone who likes clean lines and does not want their fragrance doing the talking: architects, editors, people who own three shirts in the same white. It is genuinely good office wear, and it handles dry Johannesburg spring air better than most fresh scents, which tend to evaporate into nothing by midday on the Highveld.

Be honest about performance. This is an eau de toilette and it behaves like one. Four to six hours on skin, close to the body after the first hour, with the metallic-green top doing most of the memorable work in the opening half hour. Cloth holds it considerably longer. If you want the same signature with more staying power, the eau de parfum is the sensible answer; if you want the idea in its purest and oddest form, this is the bottle to reach for, and it is worth testing on skin rather than paper, because the Sclarene effect needs body heat to register at all.
