A twilly is the narrow silk twill ribbon Hermès sells for knotting around a wrist, a ponytail or a handbag handle. The fragrance line named after it launched in 2017 as the house's deliberately youthful proposition, and Eau Poivrée followed as its sharper, more grown-up sibling. Christine Nagel, the in-house perfumer at Hermès, built it from a very short list of ideas. The house's own description calls it a spicy eau de parfum expressing a mischievous character through impertinent pink peppercorn, tender rose and intense patchouli, and the brevity is the craft: three materials, no filler, no gourmand safety net underneath.

Pink pepper opens it with a bright, dry, faintly rosy crackle rather than heat, closer to crushed peppercorns on the fingers than to anything spicy in the culinary sense. Rose follows almost immediately, and it is a fresh, dewy, slightly green rose rather than a jammy or syrupy one. The patchouli underneath is the surprise. It is dark, earthy, a little damp, and used at a level that drags the whole composition down out of prettiness into something with grip. The three elements never fully separate; the effect is of one accord seen from three angles as it turns over the first hour.

It suits people who find most modern rose fragrances too sweet and most patchouli fragrances too heavy. It is not a delicate scent despite the packaging, and it wears convincingly on anyone regardless of what the counter says. A Cape winter is where it makes most sense, worn against a wool coat in low light with the pepper reading warm in cold air, although it also survives a Highveld summer evening better than most florals because there is so little sugar in it.

Performance is solid for a rose. Six to eight hours on skin is typical. Projection is moderate and pulls back inside arm's reach after the opening half hour rather than filling a room. The patchouli base lingers longest and clings to clothing for a day or more. If you already own the original Twilly d'Hermès this is not a repeat purchase; it is a different perfume that happens to share a bottle and a ribbon.

AI Review Summary

Synthesised from fragrance data

Twilly Eau Poivrée is the spicier, more grown-up sibling of the original Twilly, leading with a bright, snappy pink pepper that gives it real personality from the first spray. The rose heart keeps things feminine without veering into old-fashioned territory, while dark patchouli anchors everything with a quietly sensual warmth that lingers on the skin. Longevity and sillage sit at a moderate level, so don't be shy about reapplying if you're heading into a long evening. It's a brilliant choice for the cooler Highveld winters or a Cape Town autumn day — that peppery-patchouli backbone comes alive when there's a chill in the air. If you love your florals with a bit of an edge and find straight rose fragrances too safe, this one is well worth exploring.
