Phlur Missing Person

Phlur is a young American house, founded in Austin in the mid-2010s and relaunched in 2022 with a deliberately different proposition: fragrance sold on emotional narrative rather than on ingredients or heritage. Missing Person was the release that made the strategy work. It became one of the defining viral fragrances of the social media era, selling out repeatedly on the strength of a single idea, the smell of someone who has just left. Phlur credits the perfumer openly, which many houses at this level do not: Constance Georges-Picot.

The house description is unusually honest about what it is doing, calling it a fragrance that evokes the lingering scent of a lover's skin, built on comforting white musk accords with sheer floral nuance and a light trail of transparent woods. Phlur's own pyramid names skin musk, bergamot nectar and sheer jasmine at the top; fresh cyclamen, neroli blossom and orange flower at the heart; and Australian sandalwood oil, blonde wood and white musk at the base. On skin the citrus is barely there, functioning as a brief lift rather than an opening statement. What you get almost immediately is musk with a soft, slightly soapy floral bloom over it, the orange blossom giving a clean, faintly sweet warmth rather than an indolic one. The sandalwood in the base is the underrated part, adding a creamy, milky dryness that stops the musk from reading as pure laundry.

It is deliberately unisex, deliberately unassertive, and it does the intimate thing genuinely well. A Cape Town summer evening suits it, worn close, in company rather than in a crowd.

Two honest points. The first is the same caution that applies to every musk-driven composition: a meaningful proportion of people are partially anosmic to the musks used here and will experience it as almost nothing, while others will find it obvious and long-lasting. Sample before buying. The second is performance expectations. This is a skin scent by design, giving roughly five to seven hours with very little projection past the first thirty minutes. It is not built to fill a room, and the marketing does not claim otherwise. Judged on what it sets out to do, it is well made and unusually convincing.
