Very few fragrances of the last decade have shifted the market as visibly as Lost Cherry. When Tom Ford released it in 2018 as part of Private Blend, cherry was not a serious perfumery note — it belonged to lip balm and cough syrup. Within a few years it had become one of the most imitated accords in the business, and a great many cherry fragrances at every price point trace their family resemblance back to this bottle. That is the heritage argument for it: not that it is old, but that it moved the whole conversation.

Tom Ford's own listing names a black cherry accord, bitter almond and a griotte syrup material, with rose absolute, Peru balsam and roasted tonka further down. The brand's description of the effect is accurate — sweet and tart waves under a candy-like gleam. In practice the opening is startling: glossy black cherry with a marzipan bitterness running through it, the almond doing the work that keeps it from being simply a sweet. The heart softens into rose and jasmine sambac, which is where the fragrance quietly reveals that it is a floral wearing fruit as a coat. The base is the surprise — sandalwood, vetiver and cedarwood with roasted tonka and Peru balsam, giving a resinous, faintly smoky finish that most of its imitators never bother to build.

It is unapologetically loud and unapologetically sweet, and it works best on cool evenings, at dinner, at parties, on people who do not mind being noticed. In high summer heat the sugar can become heavy, so a light hand is worth the discipline. It has been worn widely by men and women alike since launch, whatever the counter positioning suggests.

Longevity is excellent and projection more so. Nine to twelve hours on skin is common, the first three of them assertive; the cherry recedes after an hour or two and the balsamic, almondy, woody heart carries the rest. One spray genuinely is enough for most occasions. If you have tried and disliked the cheaper cherry fragrances it inspired, sample this before writing the idea off — the woods underneath are the reason it has lasted.

Layering Tip

Spray the heavier scent first, then the lighter one on top. Start with two scents — more than three quickly becomes muddled. Always test on skin first.

AI Review Summary

Synthesised from fragrance data

Lost Cherry is exactly what it sounds like — a bold, boozy black cherry soaked in almond and cherry liqueur, softened by Turkish rose and jasmine before landing on a warm bed of roasted tonka and sandalwood. It's unapologetically sweet and seductive, the kind of scent that turns heads in a dimly lit room rather than a boardroom. Community consensus suggests it's a crowd-pleaser that leans more mainstream than niche, which may disappoint those expecting something more complex for the price point, reflected in its modest 4.3 rating. With moderate-to-strong sillage and solid longevity of six to eight hours, it performs well enough for an evening out — wear it during cooler Highveld winters or Cape Town autumn nights when that gourmand richness really comes into its own. If you find it a touch one-dimensional on its own, try layering it over a woody oud or a vetiver-forward base to add some much-needed depth.
