Tom Ford Rose Prick

Rose is the most crowded material in perfumery, which makes a genuinely odd rose worth noticing. Rose Prick, released in 2020 in the Private Blend line, is odd because of one decision: turmeric. Tom Ford's own listing places turmeric extract second only to Bulgarian rose in the composition, and it is the reason this does not smell like the hundred other rose fragrances on a counter. The brand ties the scent to rare blooms from a private rose garden, and the name itself does the rest of the work — the thorns are as much the subject as the flower.

The opening is peppery and warm rather than dewy. Sichuan pepper gives a bright, tingling sharpness; turmeric brings a dry, dusty, faintly medicinal earthiness that reads almost like a root vegetable held next to a bouquet. The rose that emerges through it is deep and jammy rather than fresh-cut, more Bulgarian absolute than tea rose. Beneath, Indonesian patchouli exhales what Tom Ford calls the woody breath of chypre into the floral heart, and roasted tonka and tolu balsam smoulder underneath with caramel and vanilla facets. The result is a rose with dirt on its hands: green, spiced, slightly bitter, and warmer at the end than at the start.

It is a cool-weather fragrance and an evening one. Worn on a Cape winter night it behaves beautifully; worn in full Highveld sun the turmeric and patchouli can turn heavy quite quickly. It reads as unisex, though the spice and the patchouli push it further from conventional femininity than most rose perfumes go, which is exactly why many men wear it.

Among Private Blends this is one of the better-behaved: strong but not overwhelming, with seven to nine hours typical and a moderate trail that keeps to a conversational radius rather than filling a restaurant. The turmeric-and-pepper opening settles inside sixty minutes, and what follows is a rounder, sweeter rose-patchouli sitting close to the skin. Sample it properly before committing, because the turmeric divides people more sharply than anything else in the range.
